| Important Information Greek Plumbing For a ancient culture that brought so much civilisation to western society it is difficult to come to terms with the fact that you cannot put paper or any other item that hasn't been eaten or drunk first down the toilet. This is one of the most difficult concepts to come to terms with for visitors to Greece but it has to be said that putting paper down the toilet is just as abhorent to Greeks visiting abroad! A bin is provided next to the toilet and all paper and any sanitary items must be put in the bin. The waste pipes in Greece are much thinner than in other European countries and these pipes can easily get blocked. Please put the all used items into the bag in the toilet bin and every day replace with a new bag. Put the old toilet bag into the rubbish bags provided for disposal. After a couple of days you will think nothing of it and it will become part of everyday life. Waste Disposal We provide bags for rubbish disposal which can be left outside the main door of Villa Alicia for collection and disposal by us. If you wish to dispose of your own rubbish bags then these can be deposited into the large green refuse bins at the Alonia on the main road or opposite the cemetary. Water Conservation Water on Alonissos, like so many Greek islands, is a precious commodity and the Old Village has water rationing each summer to help preserve the water table on the island. A reservoir is currently being constructed in the north of the island to help alleviate the problem but this is a long term project over many years. Please do not waste water unnecessarily by leaving taps running. If you are drawing water through the taps consider running the water into an empty mineral water bottle so it can be used to water the plant tubs.. Water conservation is a way of life on Alonissos and we hope you will become part of that life during your stay at Villa Alicia.
