Eating Out

There are a number of places to eat and drink on Alonissos ranging from cheap gyros shops to expensive fish restaurants.  There are eating places in Patitiri, Roussoum Yialos and Votsi as well as in Paleohorafina.  Heading off up the island there are beaches on the eastern side with tavernas at Chrysi Milia, Tzortzi Yialos, Leftos Yialos, Steni Vala and Kalamakia.  There are tavernas and bars in the lower and upper Old Town and restaurants at Megalos Mourtias beach.

We have put together an indication of what you are likely to pay in a taverna for food and drink but these prices are to be used as a guideline only as we cannot check every taverna and bar menu.

Cost of food in tavernas and restaurants is roughly as follows:

Starters between 3 and 7 euro
Mains courses between 5 and 15 euro
Main fish courses between 10 and 50 euro per kilo
Lobster grilled or lobster spaghetti between 75 and 95 euro per kilo
Sweets 3 and 5 euro

  • When you are ordering fish or lobster make sure you get it weighed and ask the price before you buy so there are no nasty surprises.
  • There are some gyros and souvlaki outlets where you can eat cheaper but with a limited menu.

Cost of drinks in tavernas and restaurants is roughly as follows:

Wine between 6 and 12 euro per litre in a jug.  Half the price for half a kilo.
Beers between 2 and 4 euro but they vary is size from either 330ml or 500ml.
Retsina or wine in 500ml bottles between 3 and 4 euro.
Wines in 700ml or 750ml bottles vary between 6 euro and "you cannot be serious".
Ouzo or tsipouro in 50ml bottles between 2 and 4 euro.  It's cheaper to buy a karafaki of 200ml.
Large water between 1 and 3 euro

The more up market the taverna then generally the more you pay for the food and the wine.
