Shadow Puppet Show July 2008

Posters went up around Patitiri and the Old Town to advertise two shadow puppet shows to take place on Tuesday 8th July in Patitiri and on the following day Wednesday July 9th in the Old Town at Plateia Iroon by the war memorial.  Last year this was coupled with the demonstration of corn threshing but this year were separete events.  A picture of the sign for the puppet show in the Old Town can be seen on the right.

The show was supposed to start at 9pm so we turned up at 8.30pm and went into the coffee bar opposite the war memorial to have a drink and watch the preparations.  First the metal structure was put in place and then the curtains were slowly added until the shadow box was complete.  The shadow puppet show is named after the main character "Karagiozis" who has one arm which is very long.  The English would associate him with Mr. Punch in the Punch and Judy shows.  There are a number of other puppet characters used depending on the story being told.

When all the children and adults had seated themselves the puppeteer and his assistant came out with some gifts and interacted with the children presumably asking them about what was going to happen and giving away prizes to those who knew the right answers.  The puppet show started and in the darkness of the night the shadows of the puppets really stand out.  The puppeteer becomes all the different characters and you can get a feel of what the shadow puppets look like from this image of the light box.  The quality is not great due to taking night pictures with a digital camera.  We left just as the show was finishing and had a thoroughly good evening.
