Driving to Alonissos

There are a number of route options when considering driving to Alonissos.  You can either opt to drive completely overland via Germany, Austria, Eastern Europe and Macedonia and into Northern Greece to Volos or alternatively drive across Europe to the East Coast of Italy to Ancona, Bari or Brindisi and take a ferry across the Adriatic Sea to Patras or Igoumenitsa .  For those true ferry lovers you could alternatively drive to Venice and get the ferry down the entire length of the Adriatic Sea.  We have checked out many different online route planners and have come to the conclusion that the best of the bunch is ViaMichelin as long as you are comfortable with all the popups.

Not only does this route planner calculate the route in seconds but it has a vast number of locations in its database, provides a lot of on-route information about tolls, roadworks, road conditions, driving time and distance and provides a cost for petrol and tolls in sterling or euro.  You can choose fuel usage in litres/km and cost of fuel to get a more accurate idea of petrol costs for your trip.  Another nice feature to the planner is the option to choose stopovers along route.  The images below show various driving options from the route planner.

When we drove over in the car from the UK to Alonissos we took the 11am ferry from Dover to Calais then picked up the A26 motorway down to Troyes which took best part of 5 hours.  We stayed at the Village Hotel and had an extra day in Troyes to look around the old town and recover from the drive from Calais.  We then drove from Troyes to Lyon via a stopover at Beaune for lunch and stayed at an Accor Ibis Hotel passed Lyon on the A43 to Chamberey at the Aire de L’Isle d’Abreau.  Following day we drove through the Frejus Tunnel into Italy and took the A32 motorway to Turin.  That night we stayed at the Hotel Rivoli in Rivoli which is close to Turin.  We left Turin on the A1 and drove down to Bologna where we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which is near Fiera off the A14 to Ancona.  Next day we drove from Bologna to Ancona and took the 4pm ANEK line ferry overnight to Patras where we arrived at 2pm and drove along the E65 road and over the Rio - Antirio bridge to Delphi where we stayed at the Hotel Hermes in the main street.  Our last days drive was from Delphi to Volos where we had a couple of days enforced stay until we could get on the first ferry to Alonissos.
